Instructions
  1. A fairly close textured bread that is good sliced thinly and buttered, for serving after savoury sandwiches at tea.
  2. Ingredients: 300mL milk 50g butter 75g golden syrup 350g plain flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 75g demerara sugar 50g walnuts, chopped 100g dates, finely chopped grated rind of 1 orange
  3. Directions: Grease and line a large loaf tin. Warm the milk with the butter and syrup until butter has melted. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together into a bowl then add the sugar, chopped nuts, chopped dates and orange rind. Stir in the liquid to give it a rather stiff consistency. Spoon into prepared loaf tin and smooth the top. Bake in the centre of the oven at 180C for about an hour. When cooked turn the loaf out onto a wire rack and leave until cold. Serve sliced and buttered.
